Daul Putra Kembar in Pamekasan, Madura

This is Daul, a modern musical style from Madura, an island off the north coast of East Java. Daul is traditionally played during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, to wake up neighbors at dawn for the pre-fasting meal called sahur. In its short history, daul music has exploded in popularity across Madura. This group, Semut Ireng, is leading the pack. They combine traditional Madurese instruments like gongs and slit drums with more unconventional ones like blue plastic barrels normally used to store shrimp.
