There’s a dark underbelly here for sure, but that’s one of many ingredients that makes this ‘Venice of the East’ a perfect encapsulation of megacities in the 21st century, with their dynamism and tragedy. It’s modern, tropical, polluted, crowded, delicious. Bangkok now straddles the Chao Phraya a few kilometers upriver from a bay that flows into a gulf and, eventually, the sea. In 1782 it became the capital of Siam–the name Thailand wasn’t invented until 1939. Its previous capital, Ayutthaya Burmese Army.
