Too Hot to Handle: Heat impacts on maternal and new-born health (URBI Science Talk)

As the world warms, heat stress disproportionately affects vulnerable groups—pregnant women, newborns, and the health workers who care for them. This recording from the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change explores how higher temperatures increase risks: preterm births, low birth weight, and stillbirths, as well as gestational hypertension and diabetes. Heat also raises infant mortality and the likelihood of childhood conditions such as asthma, wasting, and diarrhea—especially in poorer settings in the Global South that contribute least to the climate crisis.
