La Pastorale The Tradition of Santa Elisabetta 6 January Santa Elisabetta, Agrigento, Sicily Filmed and Edited by Roberto Bellaccomo Produced by Salvatore Mongiovi For Part Two click here: • La Pastorale - The Tradition of Santa Elis... For Part Three click here: • La Pastorale - The Tradition of Santa Elis... La Pastorale is an all day traditional festival and street theatre in the village of Santa Elisabetta. It is a festival that has lived on strong throughout the years and is still told to this day on the 6th January every single year. It is a variation of the nativity story, with the main focus telling the story of a lazy Sicilian shepherd 'Nardu' and his involvement in the nativity scene. The festival follows Nardu frolicking through the streets as moans, collapses, gets whipped and spits water and oranges at the crowd. The festival is also a celebration of local food and animals, with the young village men parading their Stallions through the streets to show their power. In the past, the festival was also seen as an opportunity for the youth of the village to find a partner. Due to strict religious practices in the Sicily, boys and girls didn't often mix and the festival was a time when they could pick potential partners. They would then inform their family as to who has caught their eye, leaving it to their families to then make the arrangements for them to meet, never alone of course as it was forbidden to be alone before marriage. Nowadays, things have changed in Sicily and the youth can mix freely. This film was funded by the local councils of Agrigento and Santa Elisabetta as part of a bigger project to enlighten the world to the unique cultural heritage and variation that Sicily has. http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_El...
