"Leningrad" is a song by American singer-songwriter Billy Joel, the recording was produced by Mick Jones and was released on his eleventh studio album Storm Front. Billy Joel wrote Leningrad after meeting a Russian clown named Victor Razinov, whom he met while touring the Soviet Union in 1987. The song compares key periods of Joel's and Razinow's lives to show the cultural differences and similarities between the United States and the Soviet Union. In the song, Joel describes Razinov's life as one of the many Soviet children who lost their father during the Siege of Leningrad in World War II. He himself became a soldier in the Red Army, drank a lot of vodka to relieve his pain and eventually became a circus clown to make Russian children happy. Joel described his own life in the song with, among other things, "I was born in '49, a cold war kid in the McCarthy times". He described how he lived in Levittown and his fear of the Cuban Missile Crisis at the time. He also refers to the wars in Korea and Vietnam in the lyrics. At the end of the song, Joel describes meeting Razinov after crossing Russia to attend all six of Joel's concerts in his homeland. Razinov made Joel's then-1-year-old daughter Alexa laugh. In the final line, Joel sings, "We never knew what friends we had, until we came to Leningrad," in reference. In 2015, after years, Razinov attended a Joel concert at Madison Square Garden. This video is number 66 in my YouTube series "A Couple Of Songs I Wish I Had Written Myself" and I play it the same way I usually do "live on stage": in one piece and uncut. Have fun watching and feel free to use the available subtitles in German and English to sing along and understand what the song is about. ►Technical Details and Equipment: Video recording device: Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max (Camera App) Sound recording device: Shure MV-88 Stereo Condenser Microphone Guitar: Maton EBG808TE Vocal Microphone: Neumann KMS105 Amp: Cromacord Podium MXVS Pedalboard: Schmidt Array SA450 Guitar Effects: Lehle RMI Acouswitch Junior, Empress Effects Reverb, Strymon Lex ►Andreas Geffarth: Hi! What do they keep on fighting for? Victor was sent to some red army town Served out his time, became a circus clown The greatest happiness he'd ever found Was making Russian children glad when children lived in Leningrad And children lived in Levittown, hid in the shelters underground Til the soviets turned their ships around Torn the Cuban missiles down And in that bright October sun We knew our childhood days were done And I watched my friends go off to war What do they keep on fighting for? And so my child and I came to this place To meet him eye to eye and face to face He made my daughter laugh, then we embraced We never knew what friends we had Until we came to Leningrad #Leningrad #BillyJoel #AndreasGeffarth #StormFront #MickJones #StPetersburgRussia #VictorRazinov #OneTakeLivePerformance #MatonEBG808TE #CromacordPodiumMXVS #SchmidtArray #LehleAcouswitchJunior #NeumannKMS105 #ShureMV88 #EmpressEffectsReverb #BossOC3SuperOctave #StrymonLex
