It connects the Swiss Splügen village in the Rhine valley with Chiavenna in the Italian province of Sondrio, traversing the Lepontine Alps. The pass reaches an elevation of 2,114 meters (6,936 ft) above sea level. It is situated between the peaks of the Tambohorn and the Punta Nera. The pass is characterized by steep slopes, hairpin turns, and dramatic alpine scenery. The road over the pass is typically closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall. The Splügen Pass has been an important transit route since Roman times. Its strategic importance increased during the Middle Ages, and it was a significant trade route between northern and southern Europe. In the 19th century, a carriage road was built across the pass, and later, a more modern road was constructed. The pass has seen various historical uses, including military movements and postal routes. The modern road over the Splügen Pass (Swiss Route 13 and Italian State Road 36) is a challenging but scenic drive. It features numerous hairpin turns and narrow sections. The pass is popular with cyclists and motorcyclists during the summer months. Public transportation is limited, with postal bus services connecting the villages on either side of the pass. Recorded in 4K HDR, with binaural (stereo) audio. #SplügenPass #DrivingTour #ScenicDrive #Italy #Switzerland #PassoDelloSpluga
