[Optional subtitles] Unusual single storyline I directed in the 1990s, from a script by Tony McHale, which followed Diane Butcher's time living on London streets. Repeated references to prostitution, male and female, were broadcast on BBC1 at 7:30pm, well before the 9pm watershed for 'adult' material. The story was originally told in flashback, cutting back and forth from the meeting with her father at King's Cross. (Flashback was then unique in EastEnders.) To avoid confusion in this ultra-short 6-minute version, I've re-edited it to make it chronological. On transmission, the ending with Disa under the bridge was the climactic scene, not her reunion with Frank. Mike Reid, aka Frank Butcher, confided to me afterwards that these two episodes caused an upward blip in EastEnders' viewing figures by a quarter of a million. I have the BBC's own log of viewers' telephone calls about these episodes on my instagram, if you want to see the outrage these episodes created. Instagram handle: mike.filmandtv P.S. for the character of Disa, a young Julia Sawalha was also up for the part but I felt the audience would root more for Jan Graveson. She played it brilliantly and EastEnders thought so too, inviting her back for future episodes. Years later, she would play another prostitute in an under-rated British movie, 'Everything', starring Ray Winstone.
