Considerable advances have been made in the last 30 years towards epidemic management and disease control through vaccination, and understanding the contributions of both host and pathogen to clinical outcomes. In this review, we will summarise the rapidly changing epidemiology of ABM in the context of new vaccines. We will show how new unbiased genomics technologies are revealing specific host–pathogen interactions that cause inflammation and brain damage.
