POV: You’re Driving But Can’t See. Sources- PMID 37567751 oh57847 on TT Driving with blurred vision or visual field loss is equivalent to operating heavy machinery with a degraded sensor system; it significantly delays the "perception-reaction" time required to avoid a collision. When vision is blurred, the brain struggles to resolve high-frequency details, such as the brake lights of a car ahead or the text on a road sign, forcing the driver to look longer at objects to identify them. This creates a "cognitive lag" where the driver may not realize traffic has slowed until it is too late to stop safely. Furthermore, blurred vision often reduces contrast sensitivity, making it nearly impossible to distinguish a pedestrian in dark clothing or a gray vehicle against a rainy background, especially during the high-glare conditions of night driving. Visual field loss—whether it is peripheral (side) vision loss from glaucoma or central vision loss from macular degeneration—is arguably even more hazardous because it creates "invisible" zones in the driver's environment. A driver with peripheral field loss may be completely unaware of a child stepping off a curb or a vehicle merging from a side lane because those objects never enter their remaining "window" of sight. To compensate, the brain often engages in "filling-in," where it subconsciously creates a false image of a clear road in the blind spots, giving the driver a dangerous and illusory sense of security. Because driving is a task that relies on vision for over 90% of its sensory input, even minor gaps in the visual field can lead to "side-swipe" accidents or intersection collisions that occur before the driver even realizes a hazard was present. #driving #vision #roadsafety
