In this scene from the TV series The Big Bang Theory, Leonard says “I love you” to Penny, but she doesn’t react as expected. As always, you see the scene with subtitles first. Then, in the second part of the video, I explain the vocabulary and phrases used. And in the third part of the video, you get to see the whole scene again - this time without subtitles. Vocabulary and Phrases used: to drop the L-bomb = to say “I love you” to a romantic partner, especially unexpectedly and for the first time Used in the title: "Learn English with Big Bang Theory: Leonard drops the L-bomb" to catch your breath = to pause or rest for a short time until you can breathe comfortably or regularly again Penny: "Having a little trouble catching your breath there?" PE = short for physical education Leonard: "If my PE teachers had told me this is what I was training for, I would have tried a lot harder." Star Wars = science fiction movies Leonard: "Did you just quote Star Wars?" The Empire Strikes Back = episode five out of nine empire = a group of countries ruled by a single person, government, or country to strike back = to attack someone who has attacked you Penny: "I believe I quoted Empire Strikes Back." Yoda = a fictional character in the Star Wars films Leonard: "Oh, my God. I’m lying in bed with a beautiful woman who can quote Yoda." sweetie = used for talking to someone you love, such as a child, partner, or good friend Penny: "Okay, good night, sweetie."
