Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is sure to remind us of all of the things we love about everyone’s favorite mutated reptiles when it premieres this summer. As we prepare for a whole new world of the Ninja Turtles, we’re thinking back on the dark history behind the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that you never knew about. There were plenty of plot points in the early comics that will be hard for most folks to believe. The turtles faced many tragedies and traumas from losing a hand to losing a loved one right before their very eyes. Other plot points will shock fans who have never read the comics. Did you know that Donatello was nearly destroyed and brought back to life? Did you know that Leonardo’s memories were altered, and he turned on his fellow turtles? These plot points may be shocking, but there are plenty more that are just as dark and disturbing. The fates of Slash and Shredder are rather unpleasant, as is how Shredder got his name. You may be surprised to hear Splinter’s origin story, as well as learning about a villain who was actually the devil, himself. The comics even delve into Casey Jones’s traumatic and difficult childhood, as well as including a scene with an actual beheading. It’s safe to say that the comics were a whole different level of dark compared to most other iterations of this story.
