The location at 47 Suboch Street in Vilnius occupies a special place in the Jewish history of the city. Stories from three different periods of Jewish life in Vilnius are concentrated in the same place. Two imposing buildings were built here for poor Jewish families who lost their homes due to the terrible flood of 1896. Money was donated by baron Maurice de Hirsch, a German Jewish financier, and philanthropist who was the founder of the Jewish Colonization Association. Since the residential rent was symbolic the houses were called “Die Billige Heizer” – “The Cheap Houses”. In one of these houses in 1920-30s, there was the training of the “Halutzim”, young Jewish people preparing for the “aliya” to the Land of Israel. The last aspect of this place is related to the Nazi occupation of Vilnius. In 1943-44, the HKP labor camp was located in and around these houses and about 2000 prisoners worked in it. The fact that women and children were allowed to stay here in the camp was the merit of the camp commandant, major Karl Plagge. Moreover, in the spring of 1944, before the retreat of the Germans, major Plagge warned his workers about the impending destruction of the camp and its prisoners by the SS, thus saving many Jews. In 2005, after two unsuccessful petitions, Yad Vashem recognized him as one of the "Righteous Among the Nations".
