In the winter of 1849-1850 a group of '49ers headed to the California goldfields decided to take a shortcut. It led them into the deepest, driest, hottest desert in the Western Hemisphere. It had no name except for what the native Shoshone called it, "Tumpisa" or "Red Rock". While the pioneers were fortunate it was winter they still had no clue as to how to find water. They abandoned and burned their wagons, slaughtered their oxen and many headed out on foot. Only two parties managed to keep their wagons and by deliberate and careful consideration of the land managed to follow the valley until they found the main "Old Spanish Trail" again. Set against the background of greed and willingness to do anything to get to the gold, William Lewis Manly and John Rogers stand out as heroes. They walked for 26 days to rescue their friends. It is one of the most self-less events in all of gold rush history and is the backdrop against which the Valley is named Death. This is the story of those pioneers and how a tragedy turned into a legend. This is the story of the Death Valley '49ers and How Death Valley Got Its Name!
