While living in Chengdu, China’s ‘Western Capital’ with a population over 16million, the 天府绿道 Tiānfǔ lǜdào, the ‘Tianfu Greenway,’ is impossible to ignore. The 100km orbital cycle path encircles the city, connecting 121 urban parks and giving residents easy access to green space. But that’s not all: this green ring road is just one part of a much larger system of pedestrianised cycle routes and green spaces, which aim to transform Chengdu into a公 园城市 gōngyuán chéngshì, ‘Park City.‘ On completion, an estimated 17,000km of cycle paths will cover Chengdu like green veins.
