Well, I finally had to do it. In this video I hope to clearly show the steps that I took in flushing the coolant and using Shell Rotella ELC coolant in a 2000 7.3 Liter Powerstroke Diesel. It seems almost taboo to many including myself about what is the preferred method or correct method. I first drained all the fluid from the radiator. I disconnected both the top and bottom radiator hose. I removed the degas/coolant reservoir since I think mine may have had a small hairline fracture. I then removed both the driver and passenger side block plugs to get another 3-4 gallons of coolant out. Without removing the plugs you will not get all the coolant out. I filled the system back with 8 gallons of distilled water. I ran this a bit at operating temperature. I drained all the fluid again using the method above. I repeated this step 3 times. The final fill was with 4 gallons of concentrated Shell Rotella ELC and 4 gallons of distilled water to give it a 50/50 mix. I did install a new thermostat, gasket, and thermostat housing while I was doing this job. As with all coolant, make sure to take it to a recycling center to properly dispose of your coolant. This video was not a paid endorsement. All the opinions in this video are my own. Please take proper precautions when handling coolant and performing automotive repairs. Coolant is extremely dangerous to animals and humans. I hope this helps those out there that need this done. Please let me know what you think I did right or what I could do better on the next flush.
