Huge Typhoon Fung-Wong (Uwan) heading for the Philippines

Typhoon Fung-wong has been building steadily over the vast warm waters of the Western Pacific in the last few days, and today reached typhoon status despite its enormous size - roughly the size of the entire Philippines. The storm is expected to continue to wrap up in the next couple of days and strengthen substantially towards Category 4 status, before reaching the coast of Luzon on Sunday night or Monday. Severe impacts are possible near the landfall area, with wide ranging rainfall and flooding across the entire northern half of the Philippines over the course of the next few days. Heavy periods of rainfall are likely to cause flash flooding and landslides in the northern Visayas and the whole of Luzon. Signal 1 Warnings are currently in effect for large parts of the eastern Visayas and Bicol region tonight, with upgrades to the warnings likely inbound tomorrow.
