(14 Jul 2017) A newly restored fountain spluttered to life in a Rome park on Friday morning as a city band played Beethoven's Ode to Joy and red roses from Holland were passed out to Romans. The fountain's inauguration brought an end to a tense episode in Italian-Dutch relations when hooligans following the Dutch team Feyenoord badly damaged Rome's Barcaccia fountain, at the Spanish Steps ahead of a game against AS Roma in February 2015. While the city of Rome quickly tried to repair the damage, a Dutch organisation began gathering funds to restore the fountain. By the time the Dutch group came up with the money, the Barcaccia Fountain had already been repaired, so they looked around for some other Roman fountains in need of work. Eventually they settled on the Bee Fountain, a fountain made by Italian sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini, located on the end of Via Veneto and the fountain of the Gardens of Viale Tiziano, completely destroyed when a pine tree toppled over on it in March 2015. The Dutch gave roughly 100-thousand euros (114,528 US dollars) for the restoration of the fountains.
