Today we're testing an Intel Core i7 920 of 2008, 12 GB of DDR3 Triple Channel RAM, and the Palit GeForce GTX 660 2 GB of 2012. This time we're not using an OEM motherboard like in my previous benchmarks. It's an MSI X58 Pro-E, socket 1366 LGA. A pretty expensive socket even today. The motherboard is the most expensive component of this system. In used but in good condition, it can be found, for around 100 Euro. The CPU is very cheap and costs around 10 Euro. The Palit GTX 660 is sold for around 50 euros. I found all the prices on eBay. I'm using this system for more than 9 years. Up until three years ago, I've used it for video editing and all types of gaming-related stuff. You might guess it already this system became a bit slow over the years, so I had to replace it. But this has just been a decision for my specific use case. How does the hardware hold up in 21 of today's most-played games? Well to be clear it's not that bad actually. You're still able to play all common E-Sport titles like Counter Strike Global Offensive, Valorant, DotA 2, and so on. But also some sort of pretty demanding games like Apex Legends, Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, or Fortnite run fine. You're just not able to play games at 1080 p high settings like it has been possible back in 2012. All tested titles ran pretty well. Just one exception. Call of Duty Warzone. This game has got some sort of issues regarding Kepler GPUs since a couple of patches. You get these weird black artifacts all the time. That's not even a driver problem. It's just an awful game optimization by Raven Software and Infinity Ward for these Kepler GPUs. So besides the bad performance of around 32 FPS average, I'd call Warzone pretty much unplayable due to these artifacts. But all other tested titles have been running fine. Before I forget, I ran into a CPU bottleneck a couple of times. The i7 920 hasn't been that much of an issue because the FPS numbers have been still ok but it's worth mentioning. So overclocking this CPU to around 3.5 GHz would probably help a lot in demanding titles. In summary, am I able to recommend this system for gaming in 2021? To some extent. The performance is still ok but you should bear in mind: The CPU is from 2008. Its performance at the stock clock rate is already on the edge. So you'd probably have to overclock sooner than later. The GTX 660 is from 2012. NVIDIA is going to stop the driver support for Kepler in September 2021. So the same fate that already befell the GTX 550 Ti from my previous video, is going to happen to the GTX 660 very soon. These are 2 big cons that you should keep in mind. Altogether I'd say it's ok if you already own a GTX 660 or an i7 920. But don't go for those components if you plan to build a system that you're going to use for playing upcoming games in the next couple of years. There are way better options like a Ryzen CPU and a used GTX of the 9th or 10th series. That's it. Thanks a lot for listening to my voice-over. I hope you're going to like this video. If you do feel free to leave a like and subscribe to this channel. Stay safe and have a great day. I hopefully see you all in the next one. Goodbye.
