Source- PMID 38092039 Dr. Marlena Fejzo is a geneticist whose personal experience with extreme nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, known as hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), inspired a 25-year scientific journey to uncover its cause. In 1999, during her own pregnancy, Dr. Fejzo became severely ill — unable to eat, drink, or move without vomiting — and ultimately lost her baby. Her symptoms were often dismissed as psychological, but her experience led her to dedicate her career to understanding why some pregnant people suffer so severely while others do not. At the time, almost nothing was known about HG. Dr. Fejzo began collecting data, samples, and stories from thousands of women around the world, often with little funding or support. Over the years, she noticed strong family patterns suggesting a genetic link. Eventually, through large-scale genetic studies, she identified a connection between HG and variations in a hormone called GDF15 (growth differentiation factor 15). Her research showed that changes in this hormone and its related genes can make some individuals far more sensitive to the surge of GDF15 that occurs in early pregnancy — leading to intense, prolonged nausea and vomiting. This discovery provided the first clear biological explanation for HG, transforming it from a misunderstood condition into one with a defined genetic and hormonal basis. #science #breakthrough #research
