Former Papua New Guinea high commissioner Ian Kemish says PNG’s Prime Minister James Marape's “terrific speech” to parliament was “really important” for Australia’s relationship with the country. Marape reaffirmed his ties with Australia and urged the government to not ‘give up’ on his country during a historic address to the federal parliament yesterday. “I think James Marape really stood up to the occasion and gave a terrific speech,” Mr Kemish told Sky News Australia. “Really important because, in the end, he represents a nation of, as he says, 1,000 tribes, more than 800 languages and a country which is only 3.6 kilometres from the nearest Australian Post Office … and a significant partner for Australia. “So, really important. It’s a shame it’s taken this long, to be frank, for a Pacific leader and particularly a Papua New Guinean leader to speak to our parliament.”
