Here is Wilhelm Kempff’s rendition of Beethoven’s fifth piano concerto. Paul van Kempen conducted the Berlin Philharmonic for these recordings, and regarding Beethoven’s concertos Kempff said: « Although I have played these concertos on numerous occasions over a period of many years –sometimes singly, sometimes in cycles– each performance gives me the feeling that it is a unique event, a ceremonial act. This well-nigh miraculous quality which the works possess, of appearing always as fresh and splendid as at a first hearing, can only be due to the presence in them of hidden powers, which one might compare to the element of radium. » Recordings: Berlin, Jesus-Christus-Kirche, 1953 Recording supervision: Wolfgang Lohse Balance Engineer: Gernot Westphal Cover photo: Archive Deutsche Grammophon Disclaimer: No copyright strikes were received during content upload. Kempff described Beethoven’s fifth piano concerto as « the concerto of concertos. » Regarding score and key technicalities, he would comment on the unexpected key for the central slow movement, this time a major third below the home key instead of a major third above it, suggesting that Beethoven must originally have conceived this movement in C flat major, a key which enharmonically becomes B major written in the score.
