Their arrival follows a decision last month to commit around 3,300 British troops as part of NATO's planned expansion. The deployment comes at a difficult time for the British army after video footage showing British soldiers allegedly beating and kicking Iraqi youths was shown this week in newspapers and on television. The regional administration in Iraq's main southern province, where the troops are based, severed all ties with British authorities. 150 British Royal Marines flew in to Kabul on Wednesday morning on board a Royal Airforce Trident aircraft. They then boarded a Hercules C-130 to take them to the south of the country. The Marines' final destination will be Helmand, a poppy growing province bordering Pakistan in the south. According to a British Ministry of Defence statement, the Marines' first job will be to protect Army and RAF personnel as they build the infrastructure critical for the follow-on deployment of 16 Air Assault Brigade in the summer. The full deployment will staff and protect a new British-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) at Lashkar Gar, the capital of Helmand province. The Marines are part of an 850 advance party deploying to Afghanistan this month which will also include engineers from the 39 Regiment, Royal Engineers and three CH-47 Chinook helicopters. Their task will be to build an encampment prior to the arrival of the main deployment.
