#2: “The Meeting of the Gods and Buddha” This episode explores the complicated relationship between Shintoism and Buddhism in Japan and how they developed over the centuries and established a peaceful coexistence. To begin to understand the roles of Shintoism and Buddhism in Japanese life, this concise 45-minute overview is a good start. We see footage from varied festivals in different regions around Japan, including Nara, Nagano, Kyoto and Okinawa and many shots of Buddhist statues and temples from different eras and assorted Shinto shrines. There are side trips to Germany, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. In the latter, we see shots of the Bamiyan Buddhas, carved into a cliffside, that were later destroyed by the Taliban. Shuichi Kato comments from time to time. Ashley Thom provides the English narration. Akira Mitake composed the music.
