NMSU Journeys: Manuel Serrano

When most young kids think about summer, they imagine all the fun adventures coming their way, but for Manuel Serrano, who is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree from NMSU in mechanical engineering, he knew that wouldn’t be the case for him. Manuel grew up in Hatch, New Mexico with his parents who immigrated from Mexico. Summers for Manuel meant heading to the fields to harvest chiles and onions and cleaning the field. But Manuel wants to break the cycle of his family having to break their backs to making a living and that’s why he knew NMSU would be the perfect choice for him. Manuel says NMSU has taken the necessary steps to help students receiving the funding and scholarships they need to get the education they want. The education Manuel wants. And now he’s looking forward to the day he gets to present his Ph.D. degree to his parents for sacrificing so much for him.
