Pearl Shirley & Janet Wiseman – Porch and Parlor Songs of Old Appalachia Presented by the Southern Highland Craft Guild Craft Making & Thinking Conference Folk Art Center | 382 Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville, NC Musicians Pearl Shirley and Janet Wiseman bring the living history of Appalachian music to life through Porch and Parlor Songs of Old Appalachia. Their performance explores songs once sung in the intimate spaces of mountain homes—some meant for the parlor, others for the open air of the porch—and the stories, values, and emotions they carried across generations. Many of these traditional songs date back centuries, while others are new compositions written in the spirit of old mountain melodies. Through their performance and storytelling, Pearl and Janet reveal how music served as both expression and preservation within rural, isolated communities of Appalachia. A lifelong fiddler and dance instructor from Black Mountain, NC, Pearl Shirley has performed at hundreds of contra dances and folk festivals across the U.S. and abroad, collaborating with groups such as Blue Eyed Girl, Mock Turtle Soup, Firefly, and Twistycuffs. Janet Wiseman, a seventh-generation descendant of early settlers in the NC mountains, rediscovered her heritage through fieldwork with traditional singers and musicians in Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties—collecting over 100 songs and rekindling her connection to the mountain voice. Presented by the Southern Highland Craft Guild, celebrating the stories, sounds, and traditions shaping Appalachian craft and culture.
