How to Draw the Doric Order

This is the first part of a two-part tutorial on how to draw the Mutulary Doric Order according to Vignola as an aid to a class I am TA'ing, but if you aren’t in the class and still want to learn how to draw the Doric order, feel free to stay a while! In this first video, we are going to be drawing the Doric order at a large enough scale to construct most mouldings of the column base, capital, and entablature using a compass, parallel edge or T-square, and triangles based on William Ware’s American Vignola (as this is the treatise that most students have easiest access to here in the USA). In the second video, we will be drawing the same Doric order at a smaller scale including the entirety of the column shaft. Drawing at a small scale as in the second video, it is nearly impossible to use a compass to construct all of the mouldings, so most of these will need to be freehanded. While the 5 orders of architecture can be very successfully drawn mostly freehand at a small scale, I still believe that it’s really important to know how these mouldings are constructed geometrically before just going for it, which is the point of this first video.
