CVR & Subtitles | KLM Flight 4805 (Tenerife airport disaster) | 27. March 1977 Source: • Tenerife airport disaster ATC and CVR audio? Thanks @ygorav Date and Time: Date: Sunday, March 27, 1977 Time: 17:06 UTC (18:06 local time) Aircraft Information: KLM Flight 4805: Type: Boeing 747-206B Operator: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Registration: PH-BUF ("Rijn") Year of Manufacture: 1971 Occupants: 248 (234 passengers, 14 crew) Pan Am Flight 1736: Type: Boeing 747-121 ("Clipper Victor") Operator: Pan American World Airways Registration: N736PA Year of Manufacture: 1970 Occupants: 396 (380 passengers, 16 crew) Flight Details: Both flights were charters bound for Gran Canaria (LPA) but were diverted to Tenerife-North (TFN) due to a bomb threat at their original destination. KLM 4805: Amsterdam → Gran Canaria (planned) Pan Am 1736: Los Angeles → Gran Canaria (planned) Crash Location: Runway 12, Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife-North) Accident Sequence: Heavy fog (visibility below 300 m) severely limited visibility. KLM 4805 began its takeoff roll without clearance while Pan Am 1736 was still on the runway. The KLM aircraft collided with the Pan Am aircraft at ~260 km/h (160 mph). Both aircraft exploded and burned; only the Pan Am had survivors (61). Casualties and Damage: Fatalities: 583 (all 248 on KLM, 335 of 396 on Pan Am). Survivors: 61 (all from Pan Am, escaping via the left wing). Aircraft Damage: Both 747s were destroyed by impact and fire. Probable Causes (NTSB & Spanish Investigation): KLM crew took off without ATC clearance – the captain initiated takeoff despite unclear instructions. Miscommunication between KLM, Pan Am, and air traffic control (ambiguous use of "OK" in radio transmissions). Poor visibility due to fog prevented visual confirmation of runway status. Contributing Factors: Airport congestion (multiple diverted flights clogging a small airport). No ground radar to track aircraft positions in low visibility. Stress and fatigue among crews due to delays and bomb threat chaos. Aftermath & Legacy: Deadliest aviation accident in history (583 fatalities). Key safety changes implemented: Standardized ATC phraseology (e.g., "Hold position" instead of vague terms). Mandatory Crew Resource Management (CRM) training to improve decision-making. Enhanced runway safety protocols worldwide. Credits for the picture (not my work): Page URL: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi... File URL: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...
