4 leather strands are round braided against a wood core, followed by the same 4 strands round braided without the core. The leather strands that are braided around the core are ~8 mm wide each; in the round braiding without the core the leather thongs are thinned from ~8 to ~4 mm to give the round braid a tapered look.
