We're sending 2020 packing with a review of one of the most reviled and revered horror movies of all time in today's installment of Sick Flicks: Cannibal Holocaust! Ruggero Deodato's shocker is 40 years old, but still as controversial as ever. Loaded with unpleasantness, this is the crown jewel of the Italian cannibal film cycle and one of the rare films that lives up to its infamous reputation. Robert Kerman heads to The Green Inferno in search of a missing documentary team. What he finds will surprise you. Deodato's film earned him the ire of the authorities (who were convinced it was real), animal lovers, and the moral majority. However, Cannibal Holocaust remains one of the smartest films of the cycle -- an interesting examination of media (inspired at least on some levels by the mondo documentaries to emerge from Italy years earlier), morality, and it provided the basic blueprint for what would become found footage cinema. I had to edit a lot out of this one, but regardless Cannibal Holocaust remains one of the most disturbing and captivating films to emerge in the annals of exploitation cinema.
