In the spring of 1919, as the fate of the nation trembled, Buddhism was often regarded as a religion withdrawn from the world, centered in mountain temples and distant from worldly affairs. Yet at the heart of the March 1st Independence Movement stood a very different face of Korean Buddhism. This video explores in depth the pivotal role played by the Buddhist community during the March 1st Movement and traces the development of its anti-Japanese resistance. Religious leaders such as Han Yong-un and Baek Yong-seong participated in drafting and revising the Declaration of Independence, while mobilizing the nationwide temple network to spread the spirit of independence. Young monks of the Buddhist Central Seminary took responsibility for distributing the Declaration, leading large-scale demonstrations centered around major temples such as Beomeosa and Haeinsa. The temple network functioned not merely as a spiritual institution, but as an organized structure of resistance. Figures like Kim Seong-suk, grounded in a Buddhist background, continued the struggle even after exile in China, later serving as a cabinet member of the Provisional Government of Korea. Their lives embodied the union of spiritual discipline and national responsibility. This documentary challenges the stereotype of monks as detached ascetics. Instead, it reveals how Zen practitioners stepped forward in a time of national crisis, transforming spiritual commitment into courageous action. More than a century later, we ask: What does their resolve mean for us today? Through this historical lens, we rediscover the central place of organized Buddhist resistance in Korea’s independence movement. #March1stMovement #KoreanIndependenceMovement #BuddhistResistance #KoreanBuddhism #HanYongun #BaekYongseong #KimSeongsuk #Beomeosa #Haeinsa #ProvisionalGovernmentOfKorea #AntiJapaneseMovement #DeclarationOfIndependence #ReligiousLeadership #HistoricalDocumentary #BuddhismInHistory #FreedomMovement #NationalAwakening #Independence1919 #KoreanHistory
