In a move that surprised few, Mathias Mpuuga’s Democratic Front (DF) has announced it will not field a presidential candidate in the 2026 General Election. The party has dismissed the upcoming polls as "a sham ritual with predetermined results," according to its Secretary General, Michael Mabike. Addressing the media, DF President Mathias Mpuuga sharply criticized the National Unity Platform (NUP), accusing it of lacking a clear understanding of political processes. His repeated focus on attacking a rival opposition party has raised questions among observers about his true political priorities. The DF’s decision not to contest the presidency follows recent remarks by Norbert Mao—Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in the Museveni government—who claimed that DF is part of an alliance involving other political parties and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). Given these developments, the DF’s withdrawal from the presidential race comes as little surprise. This commentary seeks to explore the implications of these political maneuvers and what they signal for Uganda’s opposition landscape ahead of 2026.
