Pianist from New York honors six women who have shaped her as a musician. On her new album Run the Gauntlet she pays homage to six trailblazing women who have left an indelible mark on her journey as a pianist and composer: Geri Allen, Carla Bley, Renee Rosnes, Angelica Sanchez, Marilyn Crispell, and Sylvie Courvoisier. Like Davis, they are known for their groundbreaking improvisational playing. Davis will perform with the musicians who can be heard on the album, bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Johnathan Blake. Kris Davis recently made waves with her inventive album Diatom Ribbons (Live at the Village Vanguard) featuring DJ Val Jeanty on turntables, Julian Lage on guitar, Trevor Dunn on bass and Terri Lyne Carrington on drums. The project could previously be heard on our stage. The pianist also played on Carrington’s Grammy-winning album New Standards Vol. 1. Time and again she manages to surprise with new bands and throughout the years she has performed with the likes of Ingrid Laubrock, Esperanza Spalding, John Zorn en Dave Holland.
