November 9, 1988 - After pushing the Boston Celtics to seven games in a classic Eastern Conference semi-finals series the season prior, the Atlanta Hawks looked to load up on the type of talent they felt would finally get them over the hump. And so, in addition to signing Moses Malone via free agency, they also sent Randy Wittman to Sacramento in exchange two-time all-star Reggie Theus. Theus started all 82 games for the Hawks in 1988-89, averaging 15.8 points and 4.7 assists. Alas, despite a 52-30 regular season record, all was not well in Atlanta, with some pointing the finger squarely at Theus. Per Chicago Tribune report from April 9, 1989: ”Reggie is the worst thing that`s happened to us all year,” one teammate was quoted as saying last week. ”For a while, I`d just thought he`d lost his game,” said another. ”But now I can see that`s just Reggie.” Said former Hawks assistant Brendan Suhr: ”It`s been a disaster. Reggie told us he`d submerge himself in our system because he only wanted to win at this stage of his career to prove he was not a loser. Obviously, he didn`t mean it. Or he`s just kidding himself.” And a Hawks` executive said: ”Off the court, you can`t meet a sweeter guy. But on the court, his game is Reggie, just like 10 years before. His habits are ingrained and have never changed.” Theus responded by saying that he believes he`s playing the best defense of his career and that ”it`s a very difficult adjustment . . . to find a rhythm when you only see the ball two or three times in a sequence.” ”If you ask negative questions,” added Theus, ”you can often get negative responses.” ----- Dubbed by some as the best team money can buy, the Hawks were unceremoniously upset in their first round best-of-five series by the injury-laden Milwaukee Bucks, leaving Hawks fans distraught and players rattled. ”It`s obvious Theus didn`t fit in,” said Dominique Wilkins, ”but maybe he can next year.” That opportunity would never come. Theus was left unprotected in the 1989 expansion draft and was the second pick of the Orlando Magic (after Sidney Green). Tribune article no. 1: https://www.chicagotribune.com/1989/0...
