Filmed: 11/17,18/19 Union Pacific's Big Boy locomotives are probably one of the main reasons I'm a UP fan to this day, and have been for the majority of my life. While I'm far too yoing to have ever seen these massive locomotives when they were in service back in the 40s and 50s, I've been a fan of steam power since the first time I saw SP 4449 and UP 844 as a kid. So of course, when I first saw a Big Boy on static display, I've wanted to see one in action, under its own power. Which is something no one, not even the UP thought would ever be possible, simply because they are so big and heavy. But then in 2014 the unthinkable happened, UP decided to go for it. They reaquired one of the 8 remaining Big Boys left in existence, and restored to operating status. 2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the "driving of the golden spike" for the original transcontinental railroad which Union Pacific help build. To honor that event this year, the newly rebuilt 4014 toured the system and drew crowds by the thousands. After so many decades of sitting in a park, Big Boy 4014 is back and travelling parts of the country these locomotives never went too, including here in Kansas City. UP only ran the 25 Big Boys in Wyoming and Utah between Cheyenne and Salt Lake City. So, everywhere outside that region has never seen a 4000 before. We chased the train from Osawatomie, KS to Union Station in downtown Kansas City, MO Sunday, and I used the best clips from my camcorder and cell phone. When the camera stops at the end of the Union Station clip is when the camcorder's battery died on me, so good timing. All right, next week I'll resume the series from the September 14 railfanning day with Spencer. I also have two more parts of the Big Boy and 4141 run/ops at the club.
