The deadly strike, captured in real time by an FPV drone camera, was a reminder that small drones are a constant presence along the front lines. Even a simple net, screen or closed door would have protected them from attack, but due to the negligence of the Russian military, they became easy targets. One soldier appeared to wake up moments before the strike, but had no chance to escape. The drone involved wasn’t just a standard FPV drone. It was equipped with an infrared camera, allowing it to operate 24/7. It was believed to be a fiber optic model, which transmitted signals through a super-thin cable rather than a radio link that could be jammed. This allowed the drone to enter the building without losing connection, which is common with radio-controlled FPV drones. With a skilled operator, fiber optic FPV can reach targets that were previously out of reach. Ukraine and Russia are increasingly using such drones, despite their price. Recently, a Russian fiber optic drone was able to detect and destroy a Ukrainian howitzer that was hiding inside a building, demonstrating the dangerous effectiveness of this technology. Just a few months ago, such a nighttime strike on sleeping Russian troops would have been a difficult task. The first generations of Ukrainian fiber-optic FPV drones had low efficiency and were bulky, which limited their maneuverability in buildings. A standard FPV drone has three key components in addition to the body, motors, and propellers: a warhead, a battery, and a fiber optic cable spool. The first Ukrainian models stacked these components vertically, creating a bulky structure that made it difficult to control. "We are against three-story drones because they have low energy efficiency," said a representative of the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces. The following models became more aerodynamic due to the combined placement of elements. One version integrated the warhead inside the coil, another - the battery. The latter option turned out to be more practical, since it allowed easy change of warheads depending on the target, for example, installing cumulative charges to penetrate armored vehicles. Russia has also settled on similar two-story drone models, meaning Ukrainian developers have reached the level of the Russians, but now they need to "surpass the Russians in both quantity and quality" of fiber-optic drones, the SBS representative noted. The fact that Ukrainian FPV drones can now find and attack Russian troops even in their sleeping bags is evidence that this technology is becoming increasingly lethal.
