The 61st edition of the Nyanza region Kenya Science and Engineering Fair (KSEF) has kicked off at Nyamira girls’ high school in Siaya county. The four-day fair has brought together a total of 624 young student innovators from schools across the six counties in Nyanza region will witness 312 science innovations competing to make it to the national event that will take place at Kangaru boys’ high school later in the year. Only 104 top scientific innovations from the regional level will be given the green light to represent Nyanza in the national completion. Speaking during the official opening of the Nyanza regional KSEF competition, the Regional Director of Education Mr Lawrence Karuntimi underscored the importance of KSEF event saying it an opportunity for students to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and innovation which is the backbone of progress in any society. Mr Karuntimi said that through STEM innovation and education, the students become competent in problem solving and critical thinking. He said that STEM education and innovation not only drives technological advancement in the country but also helps the spur economic growth in the country by creating job opportunities and fostering entrepreneurship.
