Skiing the Crow Face of Mt Rolleston, Arthurs Pass, NZ

Climbed and then skiied this classic winter climbing route in Arthurs Pass, New Zealand at the end of August 2023. The exact route we took was between the central-left and the left rib routes, topping out just below the low peak of Rolleston. One 30m pitch of WI2 at the bottom requiring a rap on the way down and a short rock step towards the which I downclimbed, otherwise good skiing the whole way. 400m of steep, technical and exposed skiing to the bottom of the face, then another 300m of more cruisy skiing on the glacier below towards the Crow Valley. Firm wind pressed powder and breakable crust meant the snow was generally supportive and edged well but was hard and slippy - combined with the very steep angle (sustained 50deg) and constant exposure meant that slow, cautious, methodical turns were the order of the day.
