When we go really deep into the history of Kansas, we learn that what we call Kansas today was once the bottom of a vast inland sea that covered the middle of North America some 85 million years ago. Near the end of the Age of Dinosaurs, the land that became Kansas was near the middle of the Western Interior Seaway, a vast body of salt water stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Circle. The remains of many strange prehistoric marine animals were preserved in the Smoky Hill Chalk of western Kansas.... including some real sea monsters! Along with the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad from Kansas City to Denver, the Indian Wars, and the settlement of the western half of the state, Kansas became a fossil collecting focal point. During the 1870s, thousands of Kansas fossils made their way east to the major museums. Oceans of Kansas is a summary of that history from deep time to the present.
