June 11, 2009. while driving to wounded knee, i drove across the south dakota line from nebraska on highway 87 and as soon as i got to a place called white clay at the border of the two states, i found out i was on the Oglala Pine Ridge reservation. there were people lining the sides of the roads standing around and sitting in their cars, i didn't know what was going on, so i stopped at the convenience store and asked. it was a powwow, but not a tourist attraction one that seems to be advertised in every small town around here every weekend. they told me the riders were coming into town but they were going to be a little late because someone got hurt. so i parked across the street and waited. i made this video. the music is "so you want to be an indian" by marty stuart from an album called "badlands."
