Oracles in Sepia

Join us for a free series of performances, inspired by stories from the archive. Streamed via Facebook, every week on Thursday nights from 8pm for OCT + NOV, 2020. In the face of crisis, uncertain futures, and continued social injustice- there have been glimmers of hope and new imaginings. We sought the oracle and took to the archives looking for perspective. From vaults across the land, sepia-stained reels of celluloid have been dusted off, and film footage from across the years has crackled to life for us to play with.To sift through the tea leaves and imagine our shared future we present some of the UK’s freshest artists. From opera and dance, to circus, comedy and spoken word, each will create a bespoke work in response to the archive, uncovering hidden stories and presenting their unique vision of the future. Performances in response will be streamed via Facebook every Thursday at 8pm throughout October and November. If you do not use Facebook, videos of the performances will be uploaded to our Youtube and Instagram the day after. May the darkening evenings of the winter months be illuminated with rays of creativity, reflection and resilience. * PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE* 15th October: Jonathan Luke Baker World-class contemporary dance artist, photographer and creative director inherently influenced by queer identity and gender expression. 22nd October: Hollbeck, Still Fusing thick analog electronic sound with unique captures of traditional instrumental tones Hollbeck, Still’s response to the archive will go beyond a traditional score. 29th October: Mengqi He Hailing from Wuhan in China, Mengqi He is a performance artist who uses live calligraphy and a focus on 禅 (Zen) to explore humans’ connections across culture through written words and language 5th November: Libby Rodliffe Certified funny bones: dry, deadpan and dead funny. Look no further for some fresh takes on the signs of our times, as she introduces you to a few of the characters she’s met on her travels through the archives. 12th November: NuNu Theatre Émigré-Romanian duo NuNu Theatre use performance art, movement and visual art influences to create work that is humorous-yet-serious, experimental, sometimes absurd, and always packing a political punch. 19th November: Alastair White & Clara Kanter Scottish composer Alastair White and Jewish mezzo-soprano Clara Kanter will explore the evocative power of language as the pair’s operatic score reimagines the powerful imagery of our archive film footage. 26th November: Sarah Jane Dobbs Peppered with language and narrative, her aerial performances are often inspired by the juxtaposition between the grit and beauty of locations in her hometown of Sunderland. 3rd December: Ciarán Hodgers Ciarán Hodgers is a Drogheda–born, multi-award winning poet named “one of the region’s most exciting spoken word performers” by The Independent and dubbed a highlight of Guy Garvey’s Meltdown Festival at the Southbank Centre London.
