Clover's belly is huge and dragging the ground - she has to be close. The turkeys can change the length of their snood and even move it from side to side. Who knew??? It looks like Clover is getting a milk line meaning birth is imminent! I'm patiently waiting (without a lot of patience). Danki and I have a black snake encounter. Danki turned into a scaredy cat. The day finally came where we have newborn piglets on the farm!!! This is so exciting! She has 10 with 2 still births making a total of 8 survivors. The piglets are adorable with their little wattles. We try to keep the piglets away from momma until she is done giving birth because she could get stressed and harm the piglets. We found one piglet buried in the straw that we didn't even know she had. It was fine, but it surprised us. You can see her contractions by watching her belly tighten up. The birthing process itself seems to be fairly easy for a pig. They just pop right out! Clover did get a little stressed and showed some roughness towards her kids so we gave the piglets some supervised feedings, but all is looking good! Every day my family and I are learning what it means to run a hobby farm. We started with chickens then added myotonic, or fainting, goats, and eventually kunekune (kune kune) pigs. Throw in some Guinea fowl and turkeys and cats and dogs with a creek and tons of wildlife and you start to get an idea of what our hobby farm is like. Hobby farming is time consuming and hard, but rewarding and fulfilling. There are daily chores that never stop. The animals need to be fed and watered. Pastures and pens need to be fenced and built. Goats and pigs need to be rotated in their pastures to give them fresh food and to rejuvenate the land. Food is planted and grown for the animals. Medicines are given orally and injected to prevent and cure sickness and combat parasites. Hooves need to be trimmed. Babies need to be raised. At any given time we have gilts, sows, boars, piglets, bucks, does, kids, chicks, chickens, keets, guineas, etc. that need our attention, love and care. Follow along and we’ll learn and grow on this adventure together!
