Rachmaninov himself had stopped attending church services, but his setting nevertheless conforms to the requirements of the Church, with ten of the fifteen sections based on three types of traditional chant. The texts are written and sung in Church Slavonic, the language of the Russian Orthodox Church. This movement consists of a truncated version of Psalm 103 (104), in which an alto solo sings a melody based on Greek chant against a background of tenor and bass, alternating with soft passages for soprano and alto.
