How to Give Gifts

Follow me on Instagram: @masteryourtalk Buying gifts for others is a great way to show our appreciation for others, but very few of us know how to actually gift people, and I’d even go as far to say that learning how to gift others is an excellent exercise to master the art of public speaking simply because the best gift givers I know are forced to understand the person at such a deep level, that it’s a great exercise in obsessing over your audience, which is exactly why in this week’s episode of MasterTalk, I’m going to explain the art of gift giving and how to master it. 1. Gifts should be stem from your receiver’s stories, not what everyone else thinks they want (1:06). The secret to my ability to gift starts with listening to the stories I hear about my receiver’s lives. For instance, before I quit my old job, my manager always talked about how difficult it was to sleep in the train every week when he went to see his girlfriend, it was a huge hurdle that was just not a pleasant experience in his life, so when I quit and bought my manager a gift to thank him for his mentorship and advice, I didn’t buy him a gift card to Starbucks to show my appreciation for him, but rather, I bought him a travel pillow so he can sleep better during his train rides. That gift, more than anything, shows something way more important than meeting an immediate need he wanted, but rather that I cared enough about him that I bought something that he specifically talked about on the regular with the expectation that no one else would really buy him anything. When you complain about something or talk about stories, you never do it with the intention for the other person to go out and fix the problem or acknowledge the situation you’re in, so when it happens on the rare occasion, they never forget it. 2. Gifts don’t need to be expensive but need to be unique to that person’s life (2:45). When I first started working in the corporate world, we had a gift exchange, normal stuff and almost everyone bought wine and chocolates since that’s the “normal thing to buy”. Do you know what I brought for my receiver? Guitar picks. Why? Because during a conversation I had with him during my internship, he mentioned that he was trying to get back into guitar, but had trouble managing his time so he was on and off about it. So, when I bought him the picks, I said there’s your excuse to keep working on it, don’t let these picks go to waste, and to my own surprise, he almost cried tears of joy, humans love to be seen, whether it’s in presentations or through a simple gesture like buying 10$ worth of guitar picks. When my friend was leaving for Vancouver, instead of buying from a gift, I just wrote him a letter about the great qualities he brought into my life that really changed my perspective, and through that letter, he was so moved that to this day, he still has that letter with him to cheer him up whenever he’s down. Even in my case, the most meaningful gift I’ve ever received was a PDF of anonymous reviews talking about the impact I made in their lives in university. I have it on my computer, and it’s titled “Never Forget” to remind me the kind of person I am and why I matter to the world. More importantly, none of these gifts as you could probably tell by this point don’t cost a dime, but are without a doubt worth way more than a dime a dozen. 3. Gifts should be a reflection of your personality and what you stand for in life (3:59). Many people understand the idea of gifting someone else an object, but they forget that the person who’s giving the gift is EQUALLY as important as the gift itself. In that regard, whenever the receiver uses your gift or sees it, it should not only be useful to the receiver, but also useful in reminding them the kind of person you are, because I truly believe that adds so much more value. For instance, whenever my manager uses the travel pillow to go visit his girlfriend, he’ll think about the amazing memories we had at work together. The laughs, the late nights, the dinners, and the projects, it’s a constant reminder of who I am as an individual that then, amplifies the impact of the gift so much more than it just being an object.
