Day 15 - Soomin Kim (b. 1995) - my dream journal (2020) i. intro iv. fugue: the mirror vi. the f-hole guitar vii. outro Soomin Kim is a composer and singer who is curious about herself and the world around her. She likes to draw inspiration from Korean and Asian American literature, personal and ancestral stories, and ancient musical traditions, and reimagine them in a modern context. In 2026, she was awarded a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her music has been presented internationally by ensembles and musicians including the Minnesota Orchestra, Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Manchester Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Composers Orchestra, Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra, Lisa Moore, Ji Su Jung, JIJI, and Ariana Kim. Winner of three Morton Gould Young Composer Awards from the ASCAP Foundation (2019, 2020, 2022) and the University of Florida Call for Scores by Women Composers (2024), Soomin has been featured at festivals and conferences including the Ravinia Festival, Sydney Festival, Korean Composers Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Norfolk New Music Workshop, and soundSCAPE Festival. I wanted to create something that would remind us all month long of the creative presence and power of women. I aim to highlight women composers who may be unknown to the general public and introduce them to new audiences, sparking further interest in their music and their lives. 2026 is my year to focus on composers connected to Minnesota.
