Ralph McQuarrie- 2019 Concept Art Awards Lifetime Achievement Recipient

Ralph Angus McQuarrie (June 13, 1929 – March 3, 2012) was an American conceptual designer and illustrator. While it is his work on the original "Star Wars" trilogy that cements his importance and place in cinema history, he also contributed the mothership spaceship design to "E.T. the Extra Terrestrial" and won an Oscar as part of the Visual Effects team for the film "Cocoon". Ralph is responsible for some of the most important film character designs of all time, including Darth Vader, C-3PO and R2-D2. He is possibly the most well-revered concept artist of all time. On Saturday, September 7th 2019 in Pasadena, California, the Concept Art Association hosted a night of celebration at the inaugural Concept Art Awards Presented by LightBox Expo. Alan Scott presented the award to Ralph McQuarrie and Christian Alzmann accepted on his behalf. Hosted by Jonah Ray (Mystery Science Theater 3000, Nerdist), nominees from five categories were honored by their peers and curated judges, along with a celebration of lifetime achievements to the pioneers of our field and the professional work created during this years submission process. Awards were created by our Premiere Sponsor, Legacy Effects.
