POT TV – A rally in support of the Victoria Cannabis Buyer’s Club was held in Vancouver, BC on April 16th, 2023. A crowd of supporters gathered at Victory Square, the historic location of the 1971 ‘Grasstown Riot’, near Vancouver’s famous ‘Pot Block’. Supporters listened to short speeches from activists Steven ‘Landlord’ Jensen, Neil Magnuson, Dana Larsen and Ted Smith. Smith, operator of the Victoria Cannabis Buyer’s Club, told the crowd briefly of the club’s history, actively providing information and medical access to cannabis since 1996, and about the attempts by provincial powers to shut the club down. The club, and Smith, face continued raids, closure of operation, millions of dollars in fines, and the suffering of a large group of clients who may lose their access to cannabis medicines unavailable on the legal market. Despite decades of open protest for reformed cannabis laws, and over two decades of legal medical frameworks for cannabis in Canada, neither the Canadian government’s legal recreational stores and producers, nor their medical licensing and providers, properly produce and distribute adequate low-barrier access to cannabis for thousands of Canadians, as evidenced by the continued support for illegal clubs like the VCBC. Successful models for cannabis access in Canada exist, but are not legal, and face continued threat from government. Smith discussed an alarming tactic by the Province of British Columbia to remove guaranteed protection of Charter rights, first on medical marijuana patients, and then to other citizens who may be victimized by government tactics. The VCBC is seeking a legal injunction, and pursuing further challenges to defend the rights of their clients, the club, and medical marijuana patients in Canada.
