So happy to share this with you! This is the recording, taken in our lab in the very first day of meeting between the musician and the instrument, of our Lyra Viol (after John Rose 1598) with 8 sympathetic strings. The instrument has a string lenght of 61 cm for the gut strings and 58 cm for the sympathetic ones. The sound board is made by 7 bent pieces of Val di Fiemme spruce, the back, sides, neck, tailpiece and fingerboard are made of Bosnian flamed maple. Making this instrument was a little challenge for us, we want to thank Oreste De Tommaso (owner of the instrument and musician in the video) for the confidence, for all the informations and the ideas he gave to us for this work, we made this instrument for and with him! We chose to anchor the eight sympathetic strings with small bone nails positioned in the first part of the scroll, the tuning of these strings is made with tuning pins, similar to those used on the harpsicords, positioned in the bottom part of the instrument (you can see a gallery of this instrument here on Facebook or at www.carion.it). Working in this direction, we did not change the proportion beetween the scroll and the body of the original instrument. Theorically this method can be used to add sympathetic strings on finished viols not designed to have it from the beginning. We want to thank very much Igor Giuffrè and Andrea Aliangena for the time and the professionality they put in this work.
