Songs: If You Could Read My Mind – Minstrel Of The Dawn – The Way I Feel. From a young age, Gordon sang in choirs and learned piano, drums, and guitar. He moved to Los Angeles in the late 1950s to study music but soon returned to Canada to start his career. He gained attention in the early 1960s as part of the folk revival, writing songs that were covered by artists like Peter, Paul and Mary and Marty Robbins. His breakthrough as a solo artist came with “If You Could Read My Mind” (1970), which became an international hit. The 1970s were his peak years, producing hits like “Sundown”, “Carefree Highway”, and the haunting ballad “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” (1976), which told the true story of a Great Lakes shipwreck. His music blended folk, country, and soft rock, always anchored by thoughtful, story-driven lyrics. Gordon influenced Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and generations of folk and country musicians. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame (1986) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2012) and received the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honors. Despite health challenges, he continued performing well into his 80s. Gordon died May 1, 2023, at age 84, leaving behind a catalog of over 200 songs.
