Volvo Penta MD21B Exhaust Manifold

Refit of my Engine where Exhaust Manifold Clocked Up.. need some advice please. . My question is, how comes that the cooling water channel is clocked up with black diesel exhaust? Is there any explanation? Or is there a crack somewhere where the exhaust gets through into the cooling system? But that way there should also be water in the engine which is not the case. I am a bit worried about this. Maybe someone has a good comment about this. I am cleaning it right now and trying to get through as far as possible. I can not believe that there was enough cooling water going through the engine. Thank you for any comments.
