COMMITTED TO SAFEGUARDING NIGERIANS FROM HARMFUL GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS :NBMA The Director General of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) Dr Agnes Yemisi Asagbra emphasized the agency’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that only GMOs that are proven safe are permitted entry into the country. The DG gave the assurance at a News Briefing in Abuja. She assured that the NBMA will not rest on its oars in the regulation of GMO’s. The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), the leading authority on biotechnology regulation in Nigeria, has once again affirmed its dedication to safeguarding the Nigerian populace from potentially hazardous genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NBMA, Dr Agnes Yemisi Asagbara said with the evolution of science, the agency has continued to modify and update its procedures. Speaking on Tella Maize, Dr Asagbara explained that the GMO has been rigorously evaluated through risk assessments and regulatory processes, she said the maize has not been commercialized or launched as the agency is still scrutinizing the GMO The Director General Dr. Asagbra highlighted the meticulous work of Nigerian scientists and professionals, whose expertise is instrumental in the critical evaluation of biotechnological applications. The agency’s thorough assessments are designed to ensure that only technologies that are both safe and advantageous are made available to the nation’s farmers and consumers. JEA
